Birding
The "Prairie Pothole" region surrounding Jamestown is a birder's dream. More than 300 species call the area home. Both Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die and 1,000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die have listed the birding drives of our region as essential stops. Birding Drives Dakota, a devoted nonprofit, has worked with professional biologists, ornithologists and national wildlife refuges to create nine birding drives within a few miles of town. Take a spin down one or all, and see the best of our landscape and our wildlife.

Scenic Backways
If you want to see the best of what Stutsman County has to offer, take a drive along the Chan SanSan Scenic Backway. The Backway takes travelers through a valley carved out over 12,000 years ago by glacial melt water. Rich in history, the name Chan SanSan is the Yanktonai Sioux name for the James River. Travelers today will find the rich history of those early people along with scenic beauty and multiple opportunities for recreation and wildlife viewing.
